Introduction: The restless war between Ukraine and Russia has lasted for three years, with failed attempts to end it. This conflict has consequently led to hundreds of thousands of deaths, destruction, and mutual distress. Both sides have publicly stated that they would try to find a solution to this conflict; nevertheless, the notion of a "solution" is drastically different between the two authorities. This conflict continues to spiral into an incredibly blurry situation, with many questioning if there is any hope left in ending this war at any time.
Peace Talks: Representatives from Russia and Ukraine have met several times to discuss potential peace treaties and what each side envisions as the just way to end this war. Specifically, representatives met on Monday, marking the second round of direct peace talks in the past two weeks. However, there hasn't been any solid progress toward ending the war. Certain agreements have been concluded, such as the swapping of dead and wounded troops. These negotiations also covered Russia's memorandum, which outlined the terms for ending hostilities. The date for a response to the memorandum has been set for June 20th and June 30th. This document delineates the precise terms that Russia envisions Ukraine committing to. It explicitly suggests that Ukraine withdraw its forces from the regions Russia annexed on September 22nd; furthermore, other alternative terms for reaching a truce were outlined, including Ukraine's halt to mobilization efforts, the stopping of any redeployment of forces, banning military presences of third countries within its territory, denying its bid to join NATO, ending martial law, setting limits on its armed forces, and recognizing Russian as Ukraine's official language. These terms and limitations have been previously rejected by Ukraine.
Countering Attacks: Both sides have engaged in ruthless attacks with retaliatory reactions. Ukraine conducted a surprise attack and destroyed roughly 30 Russian warplanes at different air bases. These air bases are located in the remote Arctic, Far East, and Siberian regions. This attack occurred simultaneously across three time zones. Zelenskyy claimed that this attack was "brilliant" and resulted in the destruction of Moscow's strategic bomber fleet. In response, Russia launched a drone attack with approximately 472 drones, the largest number deployed against Ukraine by Russia since the invasion in 2022. These attacks escalated the potential for any ceasefire or mutual agreement. The U.S. has made various efforts to secure a ceasefire between these two sides, but nothing has been fully successful yet. Several accounts from senior officials in both Russia and Ukraine have made it clear through statements that these countries are still incredibly far apart on what the proper conditions would be for stopping the war.
U.S. Response: The U.S. has expressed utter frustration with this conflict and the lack of successful negotiations that have taken place. President Donald Trump has also made it clear that he is impatient with Putin and his relentless attacks on Ukraine. Trump has made several statements in which he described Putin as "gone CRAZY" and expressed distaste for his executive decisions. Trump has also conveyed his belief in the significance of reaching a deal with Vladimir Putin to end the war. In response, Putin has claimed that Russia is interested in these peace talks; however, these statements from Putin have been challenged for their truth after the widespread attacks against Ukraine. Trump has further criticized Putin for these recent attacks with disgust.
Conclusion: The war between Ukraine and Russia has lasted for roughly three years and has taken a massive toll on the citizens of both countries. Nevertheless, there is no clear indication of when this conflict will officially end. Both countries remain in distressing stalemates regarding the right conditions for ending this war. These discussions occur in the brief moments when these two countries are not conducting gruesome attacks on one another. The likelihood of the war ending anytime soon is depressingly low according to various accounts from each country's officials and the frustrated reactions collected from various countries, specifically from U.S. President Donald Trump.
