Introduction: Haiti has been enduring a major humanitarian crisis that has left citizens desperate for help. This urgency has spiraled from many different factors that have contributed to the violence rate, the hunger record, and the political-economic state of this country. Thousands have been displaced and persecuted as a result of this crisis.
Origins: Various contributors indicate how this crisis has worsened. Political corruption and instability have a dominant role in this. After the assassination of the president, Jovenel Moise, in 2021, the country has gotten itself into pure chaos. Since this assassination, no elections have taken place, and the current government is corrupt. This absence of authorization has enabled violent gangs to form and terrorize different areas in Haiti. The capital, Port-au-Prince. These gangs are large and are infamously powerful. Moreover, Haiti has undergone several natural disasters, which have left ruins in civilian infrastructure.
Progression: Help has been given, and little progress has been recorded. Nevertheless, it has been evident that this is not enough to restore Haiti. The living quality and crisis have only been spiraling towards a rather negative route. Gang violence has exponentially increased, and the common targets are usually women. Abductions, massacres, and rape are regular endangerments that are inflicted by these violent gangs.
Effects: These harsh living conditions have not only decreased the protective authority of the government but have also ultimately collapsed both educational and healthcare systems for civilians. Many have been displaced due to this in the hope of survival and escape from the gang violence. The lack of fundamental systems has led to the loss of resources for many, including access to shelter and food. As reported by the UN, more than half of the population, which is at a record of 5.7 million citizens, will experience severe hunger in this upcoming month. This half is roughly over 2 million and leaves many to starve from malnutrition.
Conclusion: Haiti has been undergoing a serious humanitarian crisis for years. There is a vital need for funding and aid for civilians. This crisis is complex, but the root factors must be addressed to salvage civilians who are living in these horrid conditions.
